If you're in the market for a Plasma, you're either shopping for a Kuro, or anything else. Since I don't have 00 to spend on a TV, I had narrowed down my selection to this set and the Panasonic V10 line. What I found is that the picture quality between the two was nearly indistinguishable, but that the Samsung was, by far, the more attractive set. With looks that mimic very closely the LED TV's by Samsung, the 50" 860 Plasma is a beautiful TV. You'll be tempted to attach it to the stand instead of wall-mounting it because the base is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship in itself.

In terms of picture quality, there is literally nothing not to like. Amazing color accuracy, blacks like ink, ridiculously wide viewing angle - it's all there.

Though it hardly bears mentioning (since, if you're buying this TV, you almost certainly have a receiver or some kind of external speakers) the built-in sound is "meh" at best. I use the optical digital audio output to connect to a Bose CineMate II set. I do, however, have a "low volume" activity on my Logitech Harmony for using the built-in speakers when we need to keep it quite, and if EQ'd properly, the sound won't offend your ears. At higher volumes though, you'll long for something more powerful. But look - it's so thin!

The included remote is good as included remotes go, with backlighting for every function. Not much else to mention here.

As for the infamous "Plasma buzz" yes, it's there. But I don't ever notice it under regular viewing conditions. It has to be silent, and it really only does it when the screen is totally dark.

Speaking of screen brightness - as with most Plasmas, there is a white-level limiter which kicks in when the screen image is totally (or almost totally) white. This keeps you from getting a tan sitting in front of your TV, and doubling your power bill. It is noticeable, however, when you see one of the many commercials these days who love to show you their logo on an all-white screen. It will look "dull" or almost grey. This does NOT affect the appearance of white objects in the image under normal circumstances. Only all-white screens.

Short-term image retention is a little more prominent than with LCD TV's. For example, if you watch something in 4:3 or a game on ESPN where the ticker is on the bottom of the screen all the time (by the way, get a clue ESPN - that's BAD), normal viewing reverses any of the burn-in.

It's been a great TV for us, with no more caveats than any other Plasma costing this side of a motorcycle.

Panasonic TH 65PZ850U - 65

Panasonic?s VIERA full HD 1080p PZ850 series previewed the industry?s first IP enabled television. The introduction of the IP enabled televisions, a technology that provides access to on-line content directly from the television with VIERA CAST technology, is one of many advances found in the PZ850 line.Recognizing the growing use of Plasma HD televisions in the gaming world, Panasonic created the Game Mode, which minimizes the time lag when displaying game images on the Plasma screen. The Mode synchronizes the response of the game image to the player?s operation, thereby producing an extremely clear image with no motion artifacts.Digital Cinema Color Re-Mastering is a value added technology that allows for color reproduction, enabling VIERA displays to reproduce the essential colors for viewing movies. 24p native reproduction, which negates the need for 3:2 pulldown, resulting in a smoother picture, is another feature that provides the best possible viewing experience.

I purchased this 65 inch panasonic tv about a month ago. I am more than pleased. It has the best picture that I have ever seen on a tv. If you really want the experience of the movie theater at home then this is the way to go. The installation was simple(takes two strong people to lift it). The operation of the tv and remote was very easy. I have to say that I really enjoy this tv.

Panasonic TH-50PZ77U 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

The Panasonic TH-50PZ77U is the 50" class 1080p plasma HDTV with anti-glare filter, EZ sync HDAVI control and built-in GalleryPlayer-capable SD card memory slot.

I jumped to get mine during a one day sale for a rediculously lower price than here.

No dead pixels. Very bright picture. Video reproduction on this plasma is SO much better than most LCDs I've seen.

Using the HDMI ports from a BluRay player and a HD-DVD player I fine tuned mine to the following settings:

Picture Mode: Standard
Picture: -6
Bright: +15
Color: -6
Tint: -3
Sharp: +5
Color Temp: Normal
Color Management: Off
All Filters: Off

Those settings are for when 1080 is filling up the whole picture; but I have to lower the Picture and raise the Brightness for 4:3 or video with black bars at the top & bottom.

Blacks are better on Standard-Def tube monitors; but black on Plasma's are
much much better than the LCD's I've seen. I've attempted to help a few friends set up their LCD's for best black, but resolution deteriorates on most LCD's when blacks look good. On the other hand the Picture and Brightness tuning on this plasma behaves very similar to a Tube monitor. Blacks are still a bit too milky for my taste, but I guess I'll have to raise the room lighting to trick out my eyes. I like this plasma for the price I paid for it.

Wide Color Enhancer/Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp

The NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) has established the color standards all TVs in America try to meet. And typical LCD TVs only meet about 72% of this standard. Samsung LCD HDTVs use Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp back lights to give you 92% coverage of the NTSC standard, ensuring truer, more breathlessly vivid colors.

Samsung’s exclusive Wide Color Enhancer technology delivers more brilliant colors, even in bright areas of the picture where blues and greens are washed out on conventional screens. Audio Features

TruSurround is a patented SRS technology that solves the problem of playing 5.1 multichannel content over two speakers. TruSurround delivers a compelling, virtual surround sound experience through any two-speaker playback system, including internal television speakers and headphones. It is fully compatible with all multichannel formats up to 5.1 channels. High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the two hidden, downward-firing side-mounted 2.2-channel dome speakers built into the TV.

SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass.

TruSurround XT audio also adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.
    • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
    • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
    • The SRS WOW feature widens the sound stage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
Stereo broadcast reception is offered for MTS and SAP with 181-channel capacity. A sound leveler keeps audio volume consistent during channel changing.

Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

    HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.
If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.
      • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
      • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

I purchased this TV second-hand, and I use it as a computer monitor. I do a significant amount of graphic design work, so color reproduction, black levels and clarity are very important to me.

Expect to spend some time playing with the settings if you want anything approximating true colors. At first I thought this was an awful TV/monitor. I spent a couple hours trying to calibrate it and, after being unable to achieve usable results, I almost sold it the next day. It took me a couple more hours of a tinkering to finally get it how it is now, but NOW it is fantastic.

It took a combination of video card settings and monitor settings. While calibrating I ensured I had a high contrast background with lots of dark colors. I played a video with lots of action and facial tones, and kept a color palette up. Then I played with the settings individually, I first got the monitor optimized: sharpness (0), contract (65), brightness(60), color(50), tint (G50/R50), color temperature (Cool2), in Dynamic mode using the "Just Scan" option and none of the stupid gimmicky software filtering they add under picture options. Then moving onto the video card settings I found that I needed to drastically alter the gamma settings to alleviate serious black-bleeding (+1.27). I also had to fool around with individual colors using the automatic monitor setup tool that comes with Nvidia video cards. Obviously, your TV and video card are going to differ from mine, but hopefully this serves as a helpful starting point.

The color reproduction and black levels are almost on par with my IPS and PVA panels that sit to the left and right respectively. Even though this is a TN, it does have very acceptable color reproduction. Now don't get me wrong, you will not want to do any sort of graphic work on this TV, but it looks great for movies, games and general computer use.

It is sufficiently bright with the backlight on level 0 both at night and during the day.

The remote is alright. It's quite ugly, but it's designed with older folks in mind. The buttons are easy to hit and the backlight behind the keys makes it easily usable in a dark room.

The stand is sturdy and looks very nice and clean. The base's rotation works well and stays where placed, it will not rotate on its own.

If you do much switching between resolutions, such as transitioning into a legacy full screen program, the monitor does take a few seconds to catch up. It is much worse than any monitor I've used before, but not a deal-breaker for me at all.

I can truly recommend this product, but be prepared to calibrate!
